MUSCAT, Jan 6 - A drifting stunt that went wrong claimed a life and left two others injured in Oman on Friday. The video of the accident, released by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), shows a car drifting on a road before ramming into another car. “Two vehicles involved in the drifting collided and one of the vehicles caught fire in Al Suwaiq. This led to the death of one person and injuries to two others,” said a statement from the police. Despite strict warnings by the police, youngsters attempt to engage in this dangerous sport.

According to the amended traffic law, drivers who perform drifting on road can face jail terms of up to three months and a fine of up to RO 500. Their vehicles could also be confiscated. People who film such events can also be fined, jailed and their licences revoked by the police. Following reports of a large number of accidents involving drifting, dedicated areas with maximum safety standards are being developed at different locations, including Musannah, Ibri, Thamrait, Adam and Shinas.
